   Roxi Beck, Director of The Center for Food Integrity (CFI)          

                              Ms. Beck will be presenting on Understanding Consumers - and How to Talk with Them


Roxi brings over a decade of experience working with clients across several sectors of the food system includinglivestock, dairy, grains, education, finance and government. Whether research, communications training, content generation, media, monitoring or online strategic outreach and engagement, her work at CFI focuses almost exclusively on directing strategy and activities for consumer-facing intiatives related to food.


After 17 years on her family’s dairy farm in Minnesota, where she drank whole milk and tended to her own barn of calves daily, Roxi received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and public relations from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She and her prince charming married and moved to Des Moines where Roxi joined Osborn Barr as an account executive. Roxi currently serves on the advisory board for Iowa State University’s Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative, is a graduate of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute, is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and has served as president of the National Agri-Marketing Association.


As a mom of two, Roxi’s passion for food at the office meets the necessity of good nutrition and an active lifestyle at home.



Dr. John Fast, BA,MDiv, PhD, Family Enterprise Solutions

At the age of twenty John asked his bank manager for a construction loan to start his first business. That same
repreneurial spirit led John to found The Centre For Family Business at the University of Waterloo, one of the first in Canada and now one of the largest in North America. John brings a background as entrepreneur, and educator to bear upon a successful career coaching executives and leading organizations through transitional dynamics. In that capacity John has been speaking professionally for over twenty years.


John is skilled not only as a platform speaker, but also as an experienced facilitator of strategic planning sessions and seminars ranging from three hours to three days. A gifted communicator, it is John’s obvious concern for people and his commitment to increase the individual and organizational performance of his clients that make him such an effective inspirational speaker.

Terry Betker,PAg,CAC,CMC, Backswath Management Inc

                                 Mr. Betker is presenting Keys to Planning for Profitability and Success


Terry is President and CEO of Backswath Management Inc., a company that provides management expertise to farmers, primarily on strategic, business and succession planning, financial analysis and human resource management. A popular speaker on management issues, Terry has delivered presentations to agriculture organizations throughout Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Chile, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Poland. He teaches at university and serves on national and provincial committees. Terry has completed the executive program for agricultural producers at Texas A&M University. His credentials include certification in mediation theory and strategic planning, and a science degree in agriculture from the University of Manitoba.



   Dr. John S. Church, Thompson Rivers University

  Dr. Church is presenting Insights into Sustainable Bison Production for Today’s Health Conscious Consumers


Dr. John Church is currently an Associate Professor in Natural Resource Science at Thompson Rivers University as well as BC Regional Innovation Chair in Cattle Industry Sustainability. John initially started Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch in 1997, a large bison and elk operation east of the Rockies just southwest of Calgary, owned by Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts. Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch was developed to provide resort customers with high quality bison products, produced in a natural, humane and sustainable manner. In addition to practical and direct bison industry experience, John served for eight years as the Alberta provincial government animal welfare specialist prior to joining Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia.


Dr. Church earned his PhD in Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science from the University of Alberta in 1997 under the late Dr. Robert Hudson, studying the effects of production practices on the behavior and management of bison, elk and cattle on farms. He holds an M. Sc in Biology from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia (1993), and a B. Sc. in Agriculture from the University of Alberta (1991). In July 2008, John accepted the new position as the Leading Edge Endowment Fund BC Regional Innovation Chair in Cattle Industry Sustainability at Thompson Rivers University. The Chair now leads a multidisciplinary research team dedicated to the exploration and invention of innovative practices and technologies leading to the sustainability and enhancement of the cattle and bison industry, rangelands, and meat production and related products. The scope of the research program encompasses production of the grazing animals through to harvesting, raw and value added meat products, and the preservation of the natural resources on which these industries depend. The focus of Dr. Church’s research program is on new emerging opportunities for beef and bison producers in the areas of value-added and branded meat production, which includes human and environmental health.



Dr. Todd Shury, DVM

                                   Wildlife Health Specialist, Parks Canada Agency

                                    Dr. Shury is presenting Bison Conservation and Management in Canada's National Parks


Dr. Shury is a 1993 graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). He has worked as an associate veterinarian at the Calgary Zoo and contract wildlife veterinarian for several years on numerous wildlife projects throughout Canada. He is currently the only wildlife veterinarian for the Parks Canada Agency and oversees wildlife health, chemical immobilization training, animal care and disease issues in 44 national parks across Canada. In this role, he helps manage bison herds in Prince Albert, Grasslands, Waterton, Riding Mountain, Wood Buffalo, and Elk Island National parks and sits as a member of the IUCN Bison Species Specialist Group and has been actively involved in Wood Bison recovery for many years in northern Canada. In his spare time, he is completing a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Saskatchewan on bovine tuberculosis around Riding Mountain National Park.
